Visit Places Connected to the Island

Did you enjoy Government Island?
Then perhaps you might enjoy visiting some other historical sites located in Virginia.

All of these locations are either built of Aquia freestone (sandstone) or have accents of freestone. It is possible that the freestone used in the buildings was quarried from Government Island or any number of other local Aquia quarries. This list does not include the many buildings in the Capitol that were built from freestone (also from Goverment Island and other local quarries).

Many of these sites are open throughout the week to the public, but some may have restrictions, so make sure to check the website first. Also, some of the sites have admission fees, but many are free to visit.
